Two Types of Exchange — Which Do You Need?
The most important decision before you start.
CEX — Centralised Exchange
What it is: A company runs the platform. You create an account, verify your identity (KYC), and the exchange holds your funds while you trade.
Accepts: MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, bank transfers — you can buy Bitcoin with UGX.
Best for: Beginners and anyone who wants to buy Bitcoin with local Ugandan money for the first time.
- Easiest way to get started
- Accept Mobile Money (MTN/Airtel)
- Customer support available
- KYC (ID verification) required
DEX — Decentralised Exchange
What it is: No company controls it. Smart contracts run automatically on a blockchain. You trade directly from your own wallet — nobody holds your funds.
Accepts: Crypto only. You need to already have Bitcoin or USDC to use a DEX. No UGX, no Mobile Money.
Best for: Experienced users who already own crypto and want more privacy, more tokens, or advanced trading tools.
- No KYC required
- Full control of your funds
- Requires existing crypto
- More complex — not for beginners
🇺🇬 New to Bitcoin in Uganda?
Start with a CEX — specifically Binance P2P or Yellow Card. They accept MTN and Airtel Mobile Money, so you can buy Bitcoin directly with Ugandan Shillings. Come back to DEXs once you have some experience.
🏦 CEX — Centralised Exchanges
Platforms that accept MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money and UGX. The starting point for most Ugandans.
Binance P2P
World's largest peer-to-peer Bitcoin marketplace
You buy Bitcoin directly from local Ugandan sellers. Binance holds the Bitcoin in escrow until you confirm your Mobile Money payment — protecting both buyer and seller. Thousands of active Ugandan traders means good prices and fast trades. Zero fees on all P2P transactions.
- Zero P2P trading fees
- Largest pool of Ugandan sellers
- Escrow protects every trade
- MTN & Airtel Mobile Money
- 24/7 customer support
- Seller reputation system
- KYC identity verification required
- Approval can take 1–48 hours
- UI complex for first-time users
- Prices vary between sellers
⚠️ Safety: Choose sellers carefully
Only trade with sellers who have 95%+ completion rate and at least 50 completed trades. Never pay outside the Binance platform. If anything feels wrong, cancel immediately and report.

Yellow Card
Africa's largest regulated cryptocurrency exchange, founded 2019
Yellow Card was built specifically for African users. Instead of P2P negotiation, you buy at a single transparent fixed price directly from the platform — much simpler for beginners. Fully regulated, supports MTN and Airtel Mobile Money, available across Uganda and 20+ African countries.
- Built for Africa — understands Uganda
- No negotiation — simple fixed price
- Regulated and licensed exchange
- MTN & Airtel Mobile Money
- Easier for complete beginners
- Price ~2% higher than Binance P2P
- Fewer coins than global exchanges
- KYC required

Bitget P2P
Global exchange with P2P section, growing presence in Uganda
Works similarly to Binance P2P — you buy from local sellers with escrow protection and zero P2P fees. Useful as a backup when Binance has no sellers at a good price, or to compare rates between platforms. The Uganda trader base is growing but still smaller than Binance.
- Zero P2P trading fees
- MTN & Airtel Mobile Money
- Good escrow protection
- Competitive rates
- Fewer Uganda traders than Binance
- Less liquidity for large amounts
- KYC required

Kraken
Founded 2011 — one of the oldest and most trusted exchanges
Over a decade of operation without a major hack. Strong security track record. Good for spot trading BTC and other major cryptocurrencies. Requires USD/EUR bank transfer to deposit fiat — not practical as an entry point for Ugandans, but a solid platform for trading once you already own crypto.

KuCoin
Founded 2017 — very large selection of cryptocurrencies
Supports over 700 cryptocurrencies — one of the largest selections globally. Good for users who want to explore beyond just Bitcoin. Has P2P section but does not support UGX directly. Note: KuCoin is registered in Seychelles and is not regulated in most countries — use with caution for large amounts.

🚫 Bybit — Not Available in Uganda
Uganda is on Bybit's list of restricted countries. Ugandan users cannot officially create accounts or trade on Bybit. Despite Bybit running Africa-focused promotions (for Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana), Uganda is explicitly excluded from Bybit's supported regions as of 2025.
🔓 DEX — Decentralised Exchanges
No company controls these platforms. You trade directly from your own wallet, without KYC. Important: DEXs require you to already have crypto — they cannot accept UGX or Mobile Money.
How a DEX works
A DEX uses smart contracts — self-executing programs on a blockchain. When you trade, the code runs automatically without any company involved. Your funds never leave your wallet until the trade is complete. No one can freeze your account or block your transactions.
To use a DEX you need: (1) a Web3 wallet like MetaMask or Phantom, (2) some crypto already in that wallet to cover transaction fees ("gas"), (3) the crypto you want to trade. Our free course covers wallets in detail — see Module 3.
Uniswap

Wallet needed: MetaMask, WalletConnect-compatible

🔑 The Golden Rule — for Every Exchange
After buying Bitcoin on any exchange, always withdraw to your personal wallet — BlueWallet, Blockstream Green or a hardware wallet. Never leave large amounts on any exchange long-term. Exchanges can be hacked, go bankrupt, or freeze withdrawals.
